Men's Lacrosse Hosts 2008 Tournament Qualifier Colgate on Saturday

The seventh-ranked UMBC men’s lacrosse team (2-0) faces 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifier No. 17 Colgate (1-2) in a match-up of two top-20 teams on Saturday, Feb. 28 at UMBC Stadium. Opening face off is set for 1:00 p.m. and live video streaming is available at www.umbcretrievers.tv. The Retrievers are 2-0, avenging 2008 losses to Delaware and Rutgers with 14-9 and 17-10 wins respectively over the Blue Hens and Scarlet Knights. The UMBC offense has been dynamic, averaging 15.5 goals per game and seven players have two or more goals on the campaign. UMBC rallied from a deficit of 4-1 five minutes into the second quarter and outscored the Scarlet Knights, 15-3, over the next 35 minutes to lead 16-7 with five minutes to play.After opening with a 15-11 home win over Canisius, Colgate dropped two tough decisions on Tobacco Road last weekend, falling to No. 5 Duke, 9-8 and to No. 6 North Carolina, 11-9. The Raider offense is led by senior attacker Brandon Corp. Corp has a team-high 14 points off 10 goals and four assists. Classmate Kevin Colleluori is right behind him with 12 points off nine goals and three assists. The Raiders were 11-6 a year ago and won the Patriot League Tournament. UMBC won the lone meeting between the two schools, 20-6, at UMBC Stadium on March 21, 1992. The game was significant because Retriever Hall of Fame attackman Jason Smith set the school record for goals in a game, 10, which still stands today.
