BALTIMORE—Senior midfielder Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley/Ohio State) scored a career-high four goals and junior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added three to lead ninth-ranked UMBC (2-0) to a 17-10 victory over Rutgers (1-2) Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium in the Retrievers’ home opener.

Poillon added three assists to finish with a career-best seven points in the game, while Wimer (3g, 1a) and freshman midfielder Rob Grimm (1g, 3a) tallied four points apiece.

Rutgers scored the first three goals of the game, including a pair by attack Kory Kelly, before UMBC senior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) got the Retrievers on the scoreboard with 3:34 left in the first quarter, but Rutgers led, 3-1, after a period.

The Scarlet Knights scored the first goal of the second period to regain a three-goal advantage, but UMBC tallied six of the final seven goals of the half to take a 7-5 lead into the locker room.

The Retrievers continued the run into the second half, five of the first six goals in the third period with two by Poillon and another two by junior attack Chris Jones (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). UMBC led, 12-7, after three quarters.

The Retrievers scored the first four goals of the fourth period, including a pair by senior attack Ryan Smith (Fallston, Md./Fallston/CCBC-Essex) for a 16-7 advantage, but Rutgers tallied three straight to pull back to within six at 16-10 with just 1:40 remaining.

Kelly led the Scarlet Knights with four goals, while attack Jeff Rommel tallied four points on two goals and two assists.

Senior goalie Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) recorded 11 saves and allowed seven goals in 54:34 of action, while junior Kevin Kohri (Sykesville, Md./Century) played the final 5:26 and allowed three goals while stopping four shots.

Rutgers goalie Billy Olin made 13 saves while allowing 15 goals in 51:50, while Peter Pantages allowed two goals and stopped two shots in the final 8:10.

UMBC converted on two of three extra-man opportunities and outshot the Scarlet Knights, 45-35.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they host Colgate at 1 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
