2/14/2009
Newark, Del—Junior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa.) scored a career-high five goals to lead 11th-ranked UMBC to a 14-9 win over Delaware (1-1) in the Retrievers’ opening game.
Senior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md.) and junior attackman Matt Latham (Eldersburg, Md.) added three goals each as UMBC avenged a loss to the Blue Hens in last season’s opener.
UMBC sprinted to a 6-0 lead after one quarter, scoring all six goals in the final 7:40 of the stanza. Wimer scored the first and last goals of that run and sophomore midfielder Jamie Kimbles (Centreville, Md.) added a pair.
Delaware rallied to close the deficit to 8-4, but Wimer scored his third goal of the game with one second remaining in the half to give the Retrievers a 9-4 halftime advantage.
The Retrievers scored five of the second half’s first six goals and built a comfortable 14-5 advantage with 6:17 remaining.
Senior Peet Poillon (Cranberry Township, Pa.) scored a goal and added two assists in his UMBC debut, while Kimbles scored twice. Hopmann added an assist for a four-point afternoon. In goal, senior Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md.) was solid with a 14-save performance.
