MARYLAND LACROSSE HANDLES UMBC, 19-9
5/4/2002
Senior attackman Mike LaMonica scored a career high six goals and added two assists, as #10-ranked Maryland (9-4) kept its playoff hopes alive with a 19-9 victory over UMBC (5-7) in each team's regular season finale. The Terrapins, whose four losses all occurred by one goal this year, will await to see if they will receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. The pairings will be announced on Sunday evening. UMBC jumped on top, 2-0, on goals by Scott Steele and Justin Smith just 1:46 into the contest. But the Terrapins reeled off seven straight goals over the next 17 minutes to take command of the game. The run was capped by an extra-man goal by Dan Lamonica on an assist by his brother Mike 4:40 into the second quarter. The Terrapins increased the advantage to 11-4 at halftime, but UMBC sophomore attackman Justin Smith tried to keep the Retrievers in the game as he assisted on a Franklin Berry goal at 1:39 of the third quarter and answered a Terp goal with his third of the day to cut the deficit to 12-6 with 6:58 to play in the quarter. But Mike Lamonica scored three consecutive goals and Ryan Moran added another to give Maryland a prohibitive 16-6 advantage two minutes into the fourth quarter. Moran and Dan Lamonica had three goals each for Maryland, while Mike Mollot contributed a goal and three assists. Smith tallied a career best four goals for UMBC.
