Terry Kimener Named America East Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year; Head Coach Don Zimmerman Named Coach of the Year

4/30/2008

Senior midfielder Terry Kimener (Oakton, Va.) was named 2008 America East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Year and Head Coach Don Zimmerman was named Coach of the Year in voting by the league’s coaches.

Kimener’s selection marks the third time in five league campaigns that a Retriever has earned the league’s top honor. Attackman Brendan Mundorf captured the award in both 2005 and 2006. Zimmerman earns his second Coach of the Year honor in three years after being cited in 2006.

A trio of juniors, goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md.), attackman Ryan Smith (Fallston, Md.) and defender Bobby Atwell (Dunkirk, Md.), joined Kimener on the First Team All America East squad. A pair of sophomores, long-stick midfielder Mike Camardo (Altamont, N.Y.) and attackman Matt Latham (Eldersburg, Md.), earned Second Team all-league honors, while freshmen Jamie Kimbles (Centreville, Md.), a midfielder, and Dom Scalzo (Webster, N.Y.), an attackman, was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Latham and sophomore attackman Chris Jones (Martinsville, N.J.) earned a spot on the league’s All-Academic squad. Each America East All-Academic Team is selected based on the student-athlete’s academic and athletic accomplishments. Academic achievement for consideration requires student-athletes to have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 entering the season. For team sports, student-athletes are required to be a nomination on the post-season awards ballot, which is determined by the league’s head coaches.

Kimener earned All-America and First Team All-America East honors in each of the last two seasons. One of UMBC’s team captains, he is the second-highest scorer as a midfielder in school history with 125 points, which also places him 16th on UMBC’s all-time list. Kimener is a finalist for the nation’s top honor, the Tewaaraton Trophy, as he currently is 27th in the nation with 3.23 points per game. He earned two America East Player of the Week awards this season (March 10, April 6) and enters the America East Championships with points in 22 consecutive games and multiple points in 11 in a row. The Oakton, Va. native just set the school record for games played at UMBC by making his 62nd appearance at Vermont last Saturday.

Coach Zimmerman has piloted the Retrievers to the school’s highest USILA ranking ever at No. 5 and the school’s fourth consecutive regular season league title. UMBC won the title outright in 2006 and 2008 and shared the crown in 2005 and 2007. The lacrosse program has posted 10 victories for three consecutive years, a school record, along with a UMBC mark of nine consecutive victories. His career record now stands at 184-109, while in 15 years at UMBC, the Baltimore native is 111-93 and has led the Retrievers to four NCAA Tournaments (1998, 1999, 2006, 2007).

The top-seeded and host Retrievers (10-3) open America East Championship play vs. fourth-seeded Binghamton on Thursday, May 1.

Notes: Blevins is also a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and a candidate for the 2008 Lt. Raymond J. Enners Division I Player of the Year award… he has made 45 consecutive starts for UMBC, has a record of 30-15 and is fifth on UMBC’s all-time saves list with 451… Smith burst onto the scene for UMBC in his first season in the black and gold and leads the squad with 27 goals… Atwell earned Second Team All America East honors and Camardo earned All Rookie Team honors in 2007… Latham has a team-high 15 goals in five conference games.
