Vestal, N.Y.—Sophomore attackman Matt Latham scored a career-best five goals and senior midfielder Terry Kimener added three fourth quarter goals as the visiting UMBC Retrievers (7-3, 2-0 America East) won its sixth straight game, a 10-5 win over Binghamton (2-5, 0-2) in the first night lacrosse game played at BU’s Sports Complex.

The six-game streak matches UMBC’s streaks in each of the last two seasons. The five goal margin of victory is the Retrievers’ largest of the season.

The 12th-ranked Retrievers never trailed, building a 5-1 lead in the first half. Freshman midfielder Jamie Kimbles opened the scoring with an unassisted score 3:18 into the game and Latham converted a Chris Jones feed to give the visitors a 2-0 lead just 62 seconds later.  Binghamton’s Steve Carlson completed the first quarter scoring with a score at the 9:01 mark, but UMBC junior attackman Ryan Smith got that goal back just 25 seconds in the second quarter.

Latham finished the hat trick with two goals in a 46-second span late in the second quarter. He scored his third straight goal to open the third quarter, but the Bearcats would then make their best run of the game. Carlson opened a 3-0 run with his second goal of the game and the hosts got to within 6-4 on a score by Andy Cook with 2:56 to play in the third.

But Kimener, who entered the contest with a 17-game scoring streak and was held off the board in the first 45 minutes, scored two minutes into the fourth quarter to open the decisive 4-0 run by the Retrievers. Latham posted his fifth goal at the 10:44 mark, and Kimener added back-to-back scores to put UMBC comfortably ahead, 10-4 with 5:05 to play.

Jones recorded three assists on three of Latham’s goals. Latham has 13 goals in his last four outings, while Kimener has hat tricks in back-to-back games.

UMBC outshot Binghamton, 33-30 and Retriever netminder Jeremy Blevins posted nine saves, while allowing the first four Bearcat goals. Senior face-off specialist Taylor Marino attempted all 19 draws, winning 12, including five of six in the fourth quarter. The Retrievers were a perfect 15 of 15 on clearing attempts.

The Retrievers will host Albany, also 2-0 in conference play, at UMBC Stadium on Sat., April 12.
