Surging Men's Lacrosse Squad Takes on Improving Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus on Saturday

3/20/2008

Baltimore, Md.—Two surging teams meet in men’s lacrosse on Saturday as 13th-ranked UMBC (3-3) travels to Columbus, Ohio to take the Buckeyes (4-2) on Saturday. Face-off time is set for 11:00 a.m. at Jesse Owens Stadium.

The Retrievers have won three out of the last four games, including last Friday’s 9-8 triple overtime win over sixth-ranked Maryland. Ohio State has won three straight games and their lone home loss (2-1) was a one-goal setback vs. Navy.

Senior midfielder Terry Kimener leads the Retrievers with 20 points (9g, 11a), while junior attackman Ryan Smith is the club leader with 10 goals. The Buckeyes have a veteran offense and are led by midfielder Kevin Buchanan (16g, 4a) and attackman Joel Dalgarno (9g, 10a).

UMBC won last year’s meeting, 11-9 at UMBC Stadium. Then-senior Andy Gallagher led the Retrievers with five goals and Buchanan added two goals and two assists. Buchanan scored the game-winning goal in overtime vs. UMBC (8-7) when he was a freshman in 2005.

The Retrievers lead the series, 4-2, but have won three times in overtime and captured last year’s game by two goals. OSU won the only previous meeting in Columbus, a 12-9 decision in 2003.
