New Brunswick, N.J.—The UMBC men’s lacrosse team fell to 0-2 on the season as they dropped a 13-4 decision at Rutgers on Sunday afternoon.
The Retrievers lost six of seven first-quarter face-offs and trailed, 5-1 after the first 15 minutes. UMBC got on the board at the 1:23 mark of the first quarter as freshman attackman Christian Daly (Dewitt, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal. It sliced the Scarlet Knights lead to 4-1, but Rutgers’ Mike Dugan answered back 31 seconds later to restore the hosts’ four-goal lead.
Rutgers added a score to lead, 6-1 before junior midfielder Alex Hopmann (Annapolis, Md.) scored a man-up goal at the 6:54 mark of the second quarter. But UMBC could not get any momentum going, as Dugan answered 13 seconds later. The Scarlet Knights led, 8-2 at intermission and went on to win their season opener.
Junior attackman Ryan Smith (Fallston, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa.) added second half goals for UMBC. It was Smith’s fourth goal of the season.
Rutgers’ goalkeeper William Olin made 17 saves, allowing just the four UMBC scores. UMBC junior starter Jeremy Blevins (Cockeysville, Md.) turned aside 11 shots, allowing all 13 RU scores in nearly 53 minutes of action.
The Retrievers play their home opener vs. Denver on Saturday, March 1. The game will be televised by ESPNU/WMAR-TV at 1:00 p.m.
