Men's Lacrosse Picked Second in America East Conference Pre-Season Poll

2/13/2008

Cambridge, Mass.—2007 regular season co-champion UMBC has been picked to finish in second place in the 2008 America East Conference pre-season poll.

The University at Albany, winners of four of the last five league titles, received a total of 25 points and is the unanimous choice to capture the conference championship.  The Great Danes received five first-place votes, while UMBC, which won the title in 2006,  garnered one first-place vote and 19 points. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.

“Albany is the team to beat,” head coach Don Zimmerman said.  “We are picked second, which I think we are worthy of. But the conference is getting better and better. It’s a healthy thing, but every game will be a challenge this season.”

Binghamton was tabbed third with 17 points, while Stony Brook was picked to finish fourth with 14 points. Vermont and Hartford round out the six-team poll with eight and seven points, respectively. The top four teams in the conference will qualify for the America East Championship with the winner of the tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship.

The Retrievers open the 2008 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Jacksonville, Fla. as they take on Delaware (1-0) in a rematch of the 2007 NCAA quarterfinal. A free video stream will be available through www.umbcretrievers.com or directly from www.snynlive.com. Live stats will also be provided.
