Men's Lacrosse Drops Heart-Breaking 15-14 Decision to Albany in America East Title Game
UMBC’s six-game winning streak came to an end and the Retrievers stand at 10-5. The Great Danes improved to 9-0 at home this season and 14-2 overall.
A 5-0 run by the Great Danes in the first half propelled them to a 6-2 lead and UMBC had to play catch-up the rest of the way.
Hopmann scored his third goal of the game with 1:11 to play to bring UMBC to within 15-14 and the Retrievers won the next draw. But UMBC committed a turnover and UMBC defender Travis Begay was called for a slashing penalty with 44 seconds left. Hopmann and senior midfielder P.J. Kimener scored three goals each for UMBC, while Andy Gallgher, Cayle Ratcliffe and Kyle Wimer added two each. Senior attackman Drew Westervelt posted four assists in the game and now has 199 career points. Gallagher, Westervelt and sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins were named to the All Tournament team. Blevins made a season-high 15 saves in today’s game.
