Westervelt, Ratcliffe Sweep America East Men's Lacrosse Weekly Honors

4/23/2007

Drew Westervelt had his second career nine-point effort vs. Vermont

Cayle Ratcliffe has produced six consecutive multi-goal performances

UMBC swept the America East Conference men’s lacrosse awards this week, as senior attackman Drew Westervelt (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and freshman attackman Cayle Ratcliffe (Victoria, Brit. Columbia/Western Reserve (Ohio)) were named the league’s Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively. Westervelt shared Player of the Week honors with Hartford’s Tom Harris last week, while Ratcliffe earns the rookie honor for the third time this season.

Westervelt tied his career high with nine points (three goals, six assists) in 20-11 win over Vermont on Saturday. The nine-point effort would be tied for the second-highest single game total in the nation (Division I) this season.  He became the 11th player in school history to hit the 100-goal plateau and he passed former teammate Brendan Mundorf by one point and moved into fifth place on UMBC’s all-time scoring list with 186 points (101 goals, 85 assists). The nation’s fourth-leading active scorer has already set a personal high with 51 points (24 goals, 27 assists) and becomes the 12th Retriever to score 50 or more points in a season at the Division I level.

Ratcliffe produced his sixth consecutive multi-goal game with a first period hat trick in the victory over the Catamounts. He leads the team with 28 goals and was the third-leading freshman goal-scorer in the country entering play last week.

Westervelt leads the America East Conference in assists per game (2.25), is second in points per game (4.25) and fifth with 2.00 goals per outing. Ratcliffe is third in goals per contest with 2.33 and fifth with 2.83 points per outing. The Retriever attack trio of Westervelt, Ratcliffe and senior Andy Gallagher (25g, 12a, 37 pts.) has amassed 122 points and is tied with Albany’s starting attack for third in the country. Trios from Virginia and Siena are tied for the nation’s lead in that area with 134 points.
