Men's Lacrosse Builds 14-2 Lead; Defeats Hartford 15-8

    West Harford, Conn.—Senior attackman Drew Westervelt scored three goals and added two assists and freshman midfielder Kyle Wimer added his first career “hat-trick” as 20th-ranked UMBC (6-4, 1-1 Amer. East) defeated host Hartford (1-9, 0-3), 15-8 in a conference contest.

     

    After Hartford tied the score early at 1-1, the Retrievers rattled off 13 of the game’s next 14 scores to build a 14-2 lead late in the third quarter. UMBC led, 6-1 after one quarter and 10-2 at halftime. Thirty-eight Retrievers saw action in the game.

     

    Westervelt gave UMBC the lead for good on an unassisted tally at the 9:33 mark of the first quarter. Freshman Cayle Ratcliffe scored back-to-back goals, then Wimer and freshman long-stick midfielder Mike Camardo scored nine seconds apart in the final minute of the stanza to give UMBC a comfortable cushion. It was Camardo’s first career goal and he would add a second score to cap UMBC’s 4-1 second quarter.

     

    In addition to Camardo’s pair of scores, Ratcliffe and junior midfielder Terry Kimener scored twice for UMBC. Freshman midfielder Lance Diamond scored his first career goal, while freshmen J.D. Harkey and Jordan Pierce recorded their first career assists.

     

    Brian Tilley led Hartford with two goals and an assist.

     

    UMBC outshot UH, 25-8 in the first half and 37-30 for the game. All three UMBC netminders saw action. Starter Jeremy Blevins got the win with six saves and two goals allowed in 38:45, while junior David Coker made seven stops and allowed five scores in nearly 18 minutes of work. Freshman Kevin Kohri saw his first collegiate action, making a save and allowing a goal in 3:17.

     

    The Retrievers improved to 4-0 in the series vs. Hartford and the 15 goals were a season high. UMBC hosts league rival Binghamton next Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
