Baltimore, Md.—Sophomore midfielder Alex Hopmann scored 27 seconds into overtime as 20^th-ranked UMBC nipped Brown, 12-11 before 746 chilled fans at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers never trailed, but Brown rallied from a 10-5 third quarter deficit to send the game to overtime. Hopmann scored his first goal of the game with 9:31 remaining to halt a 4-0 Bear run and give UMBC an 11-9 lead. But Brown midfielders Will Davis and Alex Buckley scored unassisted goals at the 6:50 and 5:24 marks to tie the game for the first time since a 2-2 first period deadlock. The Bears had the last possession, but Davis lost possession of the ball when attacking from behind the net.

UMBC junior midfielder Taylor Marino won the opening draw of overtime and after a time out, Hopmann quickly got possession, drove right and beat sophomore Jordan Burke over the southpaw goalkeeper’s right shoulder.

Retriever junior midfielder Terry Kimener, an Honorable Mention All American last season, led all scorers with six points in the game on three goals and three assists. Senior attackman Drew Westervelt added two goals and two assists, while Hopmann and freshman midfielder Kyle Wimer scored a pair of goals for UMBC. Buckley amassed four goals and an assist to lead the visitors and sophomore attackman Jack Walsh recorded three goals and an assist.

The game was a re-match of last year’s opener in Providence when UMBC prevailed, 6-4. This time, the two teams surpassed that scoring total by the second quarter as the Retrievers led, 4-2 after one quarter and 7-5 at halftime. The Retrievers built the advantage to 10-5 as senior midfielder Josh Porcell scored with 5:19 to play in the third to put UMBC in command. But Brown tallied twice in a span of 49 seconds to get to within 10-7 after three quarters and tightened the game on Walsh and Buckley scores within 55 seconds early in the fourth period.

Marino was outstanding at the face-off slot for UMBC, winning 17 of 25 draws and collecting nine ground balls. Both netminders also excelled, as Burke made 18 saves against 45 UMBC shots, while UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins made 13 stop against 39 Bear attempts.
