Men's Lacrosse to Host Brown In Opener on Saturday

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team will open the 2007 season as they host Brown University at UMBC Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 24. The opening face-off is set for 1:05 p.m., with the WVIE (1370 AM, www.v1370.com) pre-game show getting underway at 1:00 p.m. UMBC edged the Beras, 6-4, to open the 2006 season in Providence, R.I. Four All America East Conference players return for UMBC, including 2006 Rookie of the Year goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins. The Retrievers will feature 21 freshmen on the 2007 roster.

***        After ending the 2006 campaign ranked #11, the Retrievers were ranked #11 in the pre-season USILA poll. They are currently ranked #20 by Inside Lacrosse.

***        The University at Albany, winners of three of the last four league crowns, and defending conference champion UMBC have each received a total of 32 points and sit tied atop the America East Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Great Danes received three first-place votes, while the Retrievers garnered two.

***        The Retrievers are set to take on seven teams which are receiving votes for the Inside Lacrosse top 20. This week, UMBC’s opponents are ranked #1 (Johns Hopkins), #5 (Maryland), #12 (Denver), #13 (Towson), #19 Pennsylvania, #21 (Albany) and #25 (Ohio State).

***        Four UMBC games will be televised this season and at least five will be on radio. The games vs. Johns Hopkins and Vermont will air on MASN-TV, while games vs. Ohio State and at Maryland will be broadcast on WMAR-TV/ESPNU. The games set for WVIE Radio (1370 AM, www.v1370.com)are vs. Brown, Penn, Towson, Binghamton and at Stony Brook.

***        Senior attackman Drew Westervelt enters the season as the sixth most prolific scorer in the country. He has 136 points, which is also 13th on UMBC’s all-time scoring list.

***        Head Coach Don Zimmerman enters the year 12th on the list of active coachesin winning percentage at a mark of 62.0%. He is 13th on the active list with 163 total victories.

***        UMBC finished the 2006 season ranked #7 in man-up offense (41.7%), ninth in offense (10.33 gpg)and 13th in defense (7.93 gapg).
