CORNELL ROUTS RETRIEVERS, 16-4

3/9/2002

Sophomore Andrew Collins recorded seven points, leading a balanced Cornell (2-1) attack over UMBC (1-2), 16-4, in Ithaca, New York. The Retrievers fell behind, 4-0, after one quarter, before Scott Steele opened the second stanza with a goal 2:55 into the period. UMBC has yet to score a first quarter goal this season. Cornell extended the lead to 6-2 by intermission, and Collins scored an extra-man goal to open the third quarter. UMBC attackman Josh Gerber converted a Joey Kestermann feed at the 1:22 mark to cut the deficit to 7-3. But the Big Red scored the next three goals, and after Kestermann ended the third quarter with a score, Cornell tallied six fourth quarter goals against reserve netminder Kevin Cepelak. Starting keeper Tim Flanagan faced most of the Big Red barrage, and turned away 16 shots, while allowing 10 goals. Gerber, Kestermann, and Adam Shiley had a goal and an assist each for UMBC.
