Head Coach Don Zimmerman has announced the UMBC 2007 men’s lacrosse schedule, which features four televised games and the first spring appearance of Johns Hopkins University playing the Retrievers at UMBC Stadium.

UMBC will open its season on February 17, as the Retrievers host Butler University, then UMBC will entertain Brown University on February 24. After an early March trip to Colorado to face Air Force and Denver, UMBC welcomes the Blue Jays on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised live by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.

In addition to Denver and Johns Hopkins, the Retrievers also take on 2006 NCAA Tournament participants Pennsylvania (March 10) and Maryland (March 17, WMAR-TV) and host perennially-strong programs in Ohio State (March 25, WMAR-TV) and Towson (April 3, MASN). UMBC, the defending America East Conference champions, opens league play at rival Albany on March 31.

“Once again, we will be put to a severe test this spring, squaring off against eight teams in the top 25 from a year ago,” Coach Zimmerman said. “Add to that the fierce rivalries and competition within the America East Conference and our team will have to be on top of their game to have a chance to repeat as America East champions and return to NCAA post-season play.”

Seniors Andy Gallagher, Kelvin Moulden and Drew Westervelt have been named team captains by the 2006-07 UMBC men’s lacrosse team.

Gallagher, an attackman, has made a remarkable recovery from major surgeries on both knees in his first and second seasons (2003, 2004) at UMBC. He has played in all 30 games over the past two years and is closing in on 100 career points with 63 goals and 32 assists (95 points). The native of Rockville, Md. (DeMatha HS) matched his career-best with 24 goals last season and joins his brother Matt (’04) as a captain of a UMBC lacrosse team.

Moulden performed brilliantly as a short-stick defensive midfielder last season. The Annapolis, Md. native (The Key School) recorded a season-best 23 ground balls and scored his first collegiate goal in the 6-3 America East semi-final win over Binghamton. The Physics major has played in all 30 games over the past two seasons.

Westervelt, a two-time Second Team All America East attackman, has been a consistent point-producer for the Retrievers. After a 50-point season in 2005, the third-highest ever for a UMBC sophomore, the Bel Air, Md. native (John Carroll HS) he tied his season high with 27 goals last year. He is already in 13th place on UMBC’s all-time scoring list with 136 points (77 goals, 59 assists).

UMBC Head Lacrosse Coach Don Zimmerman has announced that Kevin Warne has been promoted to Men’s Lacrosse Associate Head Coach.

Warne, who coordinates the UMBC defense, enters his third season with the Retrievers after spending three seasons as assistant coach at the University of Delaware. UMBC’s 2006 defensive unit allowed only 7.93 goals per game, a school single season record and was the 13th-ranked group in the country.

The Setauket, N.Y. native is a former All American defenseman (1999) at Hofstra University and was a two-time All America East Conference First Team honoree.

“Kevin Warne has proven himself to be invaluable to UMBC Lacrosse, providing the knowledge and leadership essential for the continued success of our program,” Coach Zimmerman said. “He is respected by everyone associated with UMBC Athletics, representing our university in an exemplary manner. Coach Warne brings to the table the loyalty and dedication necessary to be successful at this level and it is appropriate that he be elevated to the position of Associate Head Coach.”
