TOP-RANKED MARYLAND DEFEATS UMBC MEN'S LACROSSE, 9-4

3/18/2006

Baltimore, Md.—The top-ranked Maryland Terrapins scored four unanswered fourth quarter goals and went on to defeat UMBC, 9-4, in men’s lacrosse action before 1,623 fans at UMBC Stadium.

Maryland, which fell to Bucknell on Tuesday, improved to 4-1, while the Retrievers dropped their third straight and fell to 2-3.

UMBC junior attackman Andy Gallagher scored an extra-man goal to cut the Retrievers’ deficit to 5-4 with 3:55 remaining the third quarter. Despite controlling three of four fourth quarter draws and possessing the ball for the early part of the fourth quarter, UMBC could not get the tying goal. Maryland senior attackman Joe Walters, who had been held scoreless for the first 3 ½ quarters, took a feed from Bill McGlone and expanded the Terp lead to 6-4 with 7:31 to play. Walters made the score 7-4 by scoring quickly after a Maryland time-out with 4:38 remaining and the Retrievers could not mount a threat in the final minutes of play.

The Retrievers have been outscored, 19-4, in the fourth quarter this season.

Walters, who scored all three of his goals in the final quarter, and Xander Ritz led the Terrapin attack with three goals each, while McGlone led all scorers with two goals and two assists. Senior midfielder James Hyland scored two of UMBC’s four goals, while Drew Westervelt contributed a goal and an assist.

The game was tied at one-all after one quarter and Hyland gave UMBC its only lead of the game at 2-1 early in the second quarter. But McGlone tied it at two-all at the 7:47 mark and the game remained knotted at halftime.

Maryland has now won seven straight meetings in the series, which has been played every year since 1982. The Terps have won 23 of 27 overall meetings.

UMBC won the statistical battle, outshooting Maryland, 31-30 and  taking 12 of 16 face-offs. Terrapin netminder Harry Alford made eight saves in 59 minutes of action, while UMBC freshman keeper Jeremy Blevins had six saves, going the route.
