UMBC MEN'S LACROSSE PICKED TO WIN AMERICA EAST TITLE BY LEAGUE'S COACHES

2/9/2006

Boston, Mass.—The UMBC men’s lacrosse team was selected as the pre-season favorite to win the America East title in a vote of the league’s six head coaches. The Retrievers received three of the six first place votes and amassed 32 points overall, edging Stony Brook (28) and three-time defending league champion Albany (26). Albany received a pair of first-place votes, while Binghamton (16 points) received one first-place vote.

The Retrievers (7-8, 5-1 America East in ’05) shared the regular season title with Albany (10-6, 5-1) and earned the league tournament’s #1 seed after nipping the Great Danes, 9-8, in the regular season finale in Albany, N.Y. 2005 America East Player of the Year, attackman Brendan Mundorf returns for his senior season and will have junior linemates Andy Gallagher and Drew Westervelt lending plenty of support. 19 of the 34 players on the UMBC roster are newcomers to the program.

Head Coach Don Zimmerman and his team open the season on February 25 at Brown University.
