MUNDORF NAMED AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE YEAR; FIVE OTHER RETRIEVERS HONORED BY LEAGUE

Junior attackman Brendan Mundorf (Baltimore, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) was named America East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s seven head coaches. Mundorf heads a list of six Retrievers who earned All Conference honors.

 

In addition to Mundorf,  senior midfielder Joe Cahill (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and junior midfielder Andy Gallagher (Rockville, Md./.DeMatha) also earned First Team All America East honors. Junior defender Justin Berdeguez (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Essex CC) and sophomore attackman Drew Westervelt (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) earned Second Team honors, while freshman attackman Nick Fatseas (Owings, Md./DeMatha) was named to the league’s All Rookie Team.

 

Mundorf, who earned First Team All America East honors in 2004, leads the Retrievers in scoring with 29 goals and 26 assists for 56 points. He is ranked seventh nationally in points per game (3.93), and has moved into 12th place on UMBC’s all time scoring list with 136 points (84 goals, 52 assists). Mundorf was named America East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for games played March 7-March 13, 2005. Mundorf is now fifth all-time amongst UMBC’s Division I scorers, and has surpassed his 48-point season output of a year ago. His 55-point single season is the tied for the 13th-best in school history. He is the first player to hit the 50-point plateau since Dan Marohl posted 52 points in 2000.

 

Cahill has 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists), 12 more than his best previous season, which was 10 in 2004. Gallagher, playing his first complete season after suffering torn ACL’s during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, has tallied 32 points (21 goals, 11 assists).

 

Berdeguez, the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year in the NJCAA, has played close defense and long stick midfield for UMBC, and is second on the team with 44 ground balls. Westervelt, the lone Retriever to score in all 14 games this year and owns a scoring streak of a point in 24 straight contests. He has been named America East co-Player of the Week in each of the past two weeks and is UMBC’s leading scorer in league play with 23 points in 6 games. Fatseas has 13 goals in his initial collegiate campaign and was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on March 21.

 

Stony Brook’s Bo Tripodi was named the league’s Rookie of the Year and Seawolf Head Coach Lars Tiffany was tabbed as Coach of the Year.
