UMBC EARNS NO. 1 SEED WITH 9-8 VICTORY OVER ALBANY

Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC Retrievers (7-7, 5-1 AE) defeated Albany (8-5, 5-1) by a final score of 9-8 in America East men's lacrosse action on Saturday night. UMBC, who held a 8-3 lead at one point of the game, held off a late run by the Great Danes to win the game and earn the top seed in the America East Conference Tournament.
UMBC was fueled behind four goals and one assist by Drew Westervelt and three goals and one assist by Andy Gallegher. The Retrievers held a 5-2 lead at halftime and an 8-4 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Albany, however, scored the final 5-of-6 goals of the game to close the gap to 9-8, but were unable to finish the job as UMBC came away with the one-goal win.
UMBC and University at Albany will be seeded 1-2 when the four-team America East Men’s Lacrosse Championship kicks off with semifinal games on Wednesday, May 4.
No. 1 UMBC will play host to No. 4 Stony Brook (4-2, 9-5) at the UMBC Stadium Complex in Baltimore, Md. In the other semifinal, No. 3 Binghamton (4-2, 4-8) will travel to northeast to meet No. 2 Albany (5-1, 8-5) at Varsity Field in Albany, N.Y. Game times for both semifinals matches will be posted on Americaeast.com once they are made available.
The higher remaining seed will host the championship game, which is set for Saturday, May 7. Albany is the two-time defending America East Champion. Stony Brook won the America East Championship in 2002.
