Baltimore, MD—UMBC scored the game’s first six goals and the host Retrievers (4-5, 3-0 America East) cruised to a 13-6 victory over Quinnipiac (1-8, 0-2 AE) in an America East contest.

Retriever junior attackman Brendan Mundorf posted a career high 5 assists to go along with a pair of goals and midfielders Joe Cahill and Andy Gallagher each scored 3 goals in the win. It was Cahill’s first-ever three-goal effort and Gallagher’s first since the 2003 campaign.

UMBC scored just 49 seconds into the game when Gallagher drilled home Mundorf’s feed from behind the net. After a James Hyland unassisted tally at the 4:19 mark, Cahill (6:28) and Hyland (11:41) each scored off Mundorf passes, and Mundorf closed the first quarter scoring with his first score of the day at the 12:23 mark. Gallagher extended UMBC’s lead to 6-0 by scoring the Retrievers’ first man-down goal of the year 4:27 into the second quarter, before the Bobcats’ Josh Murray put the visitors on the board 20 minutes and 31 seconds into the contest.

UMBC led, 8-2, at intermission and extended the margin to 11-3 after three quarters.

Junior attackman Eric Trama scored a pair of goals for the Bobcats, while Murray added 1 goal and 1 assist. Freshman face off specialist Chad Bernstein was impressive for Quinnipiac, controlling 12 of 18 draws he attempted and corralling 8 ground balls.

The Retrievers outshot QU, 33-30, and UMBC starting netminder Kevin Cepelak made 7 saves, while allowing a pair of goals in the first 30 minutes of action. Cepelak lowered his goals against average in  America East games to 5.29 in nine appearances. Bobcat goalkeeper James Nastro went the distance and made 13 saves.

UMBC, which led the nation in extra man goals entering the week, scored 2 on 4 attempts and is now 20 of 40 on the season.
