FIVE RETRIEVERS EARN ALL AMERICA EAST HONORS IN MEN'S LACROSSE

5/6/2004

Five UMBC men’s lacrosse players received All America East Conference honors, as the two All-League teams and All-Rookie team were announced today.  Sophomore attackman Brendan Mundorf (Mt. St. Joseph/Baltimore, MD), and senior midfielders Franklin Berry (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, MD) and Pat Muston (Novi./Novi, Mich.) earned First Team All America East honors, senior defender Brad Preisinger (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, MD) was a Second Team selection, and freshman attackman Drew Westervelt (John Carroll/Bel Air, MD) earned a spot on the All Rookie Team.

Mundorf led the Retrievers in scoring, and was second in the America East Conference with 33 goals and 48 points. He scored 15 goals and added 9 assists in UMBC’s last five games, including a nine-point (7g, 2a) effort in a 13-7 win over Loyola. Berry had his best season with 13 goals and 7 assists, and finished his career with 34 goals and 51 points. He tallied the game-tying goal with 56 seconds left in regulation that sent the America East semi-final game vs. Albany into overtime, although the Great Danes prevailed, 9-8, in overtime. Muston was UMBC’s most dominant face-off man over the past 15 years, as he controlled nearly 63% of the draws this season, and led the America East in both face-off percentage and ground balls. He won 383 career face-offs, second in school history, and amassed 215 ground balls, ninth-best all-time.

Preisinger, a former walk-on, started 25 of 26 games over the past two years, and became UMBC’s “shut-down” close defender this season. He recorded 14 ground balls, and only was whistled for three penalties in the 2004 campaign.

Westervelt was thrust into a primary offensive role after sophomore attackman Andy Gallagher suffered a torn ACL after the third game of the season. He responded by tallying 23 goals and tied Mundorf for the team lead with 15 assists. Westervelt tied a school record by recording three extra-man goals vs. Quinnipiac on April 10.
