Junior midfielder Jamie Lacey scored with 22 seconds to play as visiting Stony Brook (7-5, 3-2 America East) rallied from a late 5-3 deficit to stun UMBC, 6-5, (5-6, 3-2 America East) in the Retrievers’ final home game of the season.

With the game tied at 3-3 entering the fourth quarter, UMBC’s Brendan Mundorf and James Hyland scored to give the Retrievers a 5-3 advantage with 7:01 to play. The Seawolves began their comeback, when Lacey tapped in a Jason Cappadoro feed on the extra-man with 3:28 remaining. Stony Brook captured the ensuing draw and outhustled UMBC to a ground ball after Retriever goalie Kevin Cepelak made a save with less than two minutes remaining. After a timeout, Stony Brook attackman Adam Marksberry took a feed from Lacey and beat Cepelak to knot the score at 5-5 with 1:06 remaining.

Stony Brook won the next face-off, and ran down the clock, until Cappadoro again found Lacey open about six yards away from the cage. Lacey bounced his shot by Cepelak to give the visitors their first lead since the second quarter. UMBC won the next draw and called time out with 18 seconds left, but shots by Franklin Berry and Brendan Mundorf in the final seven seconds were not on goal.

The win clinches a spot in the four-team America East Tournament for the Seawolves. UMBC faces a must win situation next Saturday at Vermont.

Stony Brook freshman netminder Brendan Callahan was brilliant in the first half, making 14 saves in the first 30 minutes, as UMBC outshot USB, 22-14. Callahan broke his season mark with 21 saves for the game. Cepelak made 9 stops for UMBC.

The Retrievers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as senior midfielder Matt Gallagher and junior middie Jerry Solazzo scored in the first 6:30 of play. But Marksberry and Cappadoro equalized those early goals to tie the score at 2-2 after one quarter, and Stony Brook took its first lead on an unassisted score by Matthew Donovan 1:29 into the second quarter. Solazzo scored his second extra-man goal of the half at the 12:18 mark to draw UMBC even at intermission.

Lacey (2g, 1a) and Cappadoro (1g, 2a) led the way for Stony Brook, while Marksberry had two goals. Solazzo scored twice for UMBC, Mundorf had a goal and an assist and freshman attackman Drew Westervelt had two assists.

UMBC has now played five one-goal games this season, losing three of those five. In all three losses, UMBC held a lead in the fourth quarter. The Retrievers have not won back-to-back games since wins over Ohio State and Hartford in early March.
