Baltimore, MD—Sophomore attackman Joe Walters scored all three of his goals in the second quarter to snap a 2-2 tie, and led 2nd-ranked Maryland (5-0) to a 9-4 victory over #13 UMBC (2-2) before 2,144 fans at UMBC Stadium.

The Terrapins never trailed, but UMBC senior midfielder Franklin Berry drew UMBC even at 2-2 with an unassisted score 2:07 into the second quarter. Then Walters beat a pair of short stick defensive midfielders on back-to-back plays at the 4:36 and 6:12 mark to stake the visitors to a 4-2 lead. He closed the half by converting a feed from Xander Ritz at the 13:12 mark to give Maryland a 5-2 halftime edge.

After Maryland’s Mike Brown scored the lone goal of the third quarter, UMBC sophomore attackman Brendan Mundorf snapped a Retriever scoreless skein of 29:12 with an unassisted goal 1:19 into the fourth quarter. But UMBC committed a turnover after winning the ensuing face-off, and Brown converted a pass from Paul Gillette on a fast break to restore Maryland’s four goal advantage at 7-3. Terrapin senior netminder Tim McGinnis was outstanding, making 8 of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

UMBC senior face off specialist Pat Muston won 10 of 14 draws, including all five in the fourth quarter.

Walters added an assist to his scoring total, while Brown, a freshman attackman, added two goals for Maryland. Mundorf was UMBC’s lone multiple point man with a pair of goals. UMBC junior neminder Kevin Cepelak made 11 stops for UMBC.

UMBC played without the services of leading scorer Andy Gallagher, who suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in practice earlier this week.
