No. 19 UMBC MEN’S LAX FALLS TO NO. 9 DUKE IN SEASON OPENER

Durham, N.C. – The UMBC men’s lacrosse team (0-1) lost to No. 9 Duke (1-0) in both team’s season openers on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 11-8. The Retrievers rallied from a 9-3 halftime deficit, holding the Blue Devils to a mere two markers in the second half including none in the fourth quarter but were unable to get any closer than the three-goal deficit at the end of the game.
After Blue Devil goals by Chris Haunss and Bret Thompson to start the game, Brendan Mundorf, who had a three-point day for the Retrievers, tallied an unassisted goal to put the Retrievers on the board.
The Blue Devils would go on a three-goal run to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter as Matt Danowski, who scored four goals and six points on the day for Duke, netted all three of the Blue Devils’ scores.
The Blue Devils added to their advantage by outscoring the Retrievers 4-2 in the second quarter.
After trading goals to start the third quarter the Retrievers netted back-to-back markers as Andy Gallagher scored a man-up goal with 6:18 to play and Berry Franklin tallied an unassisted goal.
Down 11-6 opening the fourth, the Retrievers scored two goals as Andy Gallagher dished out both assists, first to Corey Warner and then Mundorf at 7:04 to play. The Retrievers, however, would not beable to close the gap anymore as Duke claimed the 11-8 win.
Mundorf and Gallagher each tallied three points and Retriever goal minder Kevin Cepelak made 13 saves. For the Blue Devils, Dan Loftus made 12 saves in the net and Danowski was the only Duke player to tally more than one point with six (4g, 2a) on the day.
