Fritz Hoffecker was added to the staff as a volunteer assistant coach this spring. He will work primarily with UMBC’s goalkeepers.

Hoffecker has been a lacrosse goalie since 1962 - at high school in Maryland, as a starter at Princeton and as a club player for 40 years. In recent years, he even had a tryout with the Washington Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse and was competing well against players less than half his age.

The newest Retriever staff member is the author of several books, including The Beast in the Crease, where he shares everything he has learned about how to be a great goalie.

A native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Hoffecker has also written extensively about the Chesapeake Bay and its inhabitants in articles for The Baltimore Sun and as a background for several of his fictional works.

Hoffecker has worked in the fields of telecommunications and IT for over a quarter-century for such firms as Sprint, British Telecommunications, Lucent Technologies and Booz Allen Hamilton. He has worked in such places as England, India, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq and he currently does classified technical work for an agency of the Department of Defense.

Hoffecker received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton in 1971 and later earned a master’s degree from Villanova University.
