2005: A Second Team All America East performer last season…was UMBC’s top point-producer in league play with 23 points in six games…led the conference with ten extra-man goals, just one shy of tying a UMBC single season record…his 50 points were the third highest by a UMBC sophomore in school history…Marty Cloud had 58 points in 1979 and Chris Turner had 54 points in 1997…was the lone Retriever to score in all 15 games last season and has at least a point in 25 straight games entering the ’06 campaign…opened the season with a brilliant four-goal, three-assist effort at Duke in UMBC’s narrow 12-10 loss to the eventual national runner-up…struck for two goals and three assists against another ACC foe, Maryland on March 19…posted two goals and two helpers in league-opening win vs. Vermont…produced a five-point effort (2g, 3a) in 10-4 win over Binghamton…earned America East co-Player of the Week honors in the final two weeks of the regular season…scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime vs. Loyola on April 19, then followed up with a five-point effort (2g, 3a) in a narrow 10-9 loss at Stony Brook on April 23…the following Saturday, he helped UMBC earn the #1 seed in the America East Tournament with a four-goal, one-assist performance at Albany…scored a pair of goals vs. Stony Brook in UMBC’s semi-final loss to the Seawolves…needs 12 points to become the 22nd Retriever to hit the 100-point plateau…averaging 3.03 points per game in his career.    

 

2004: A member of the America East Conference’s All Rookie Team in 2004...with 38 points, he bettered teammate Brendan Mundorf’s freshman scoring mark of 33 points from the previous year...it was the eighth best freshman scoring total in school history, the top figure since Dan Marohl’s 53 points in 1997, and the fourth-best in UMBC’s 24-year Division I history…a three-time America East Conference Rookie of the Week...finished seventh in the league in scoring (2.71 ppg)...recorded a point in all but one game last season...earned ROW honors after a 3-goal effort vs. Hartford (3/15), a 2-goal, 2-assist performance vs. Albany (4/3) and a season high five-point (4g, 1a) effort at Vermont (5/3)...produced three four-point efforts on the year, vs. Ohio State, Delaware, and Albany, all with 2 goals and 2 helpers...tied a school record by scoring 3 extra-man goals in a 12-7 win over Quinnipiac...tied for team lead with 5 extra-man scores on the campaign.

 

BACKGROUND: A Baltimore Sun All Metro selection and the Harford County co-Player of the Year...tallied 41 goals and added 30 assists as a senior, scoring three or more goals in eight games in 2003...scored five goals, including the game-tying and game-winning goals in a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Park, clinching the MIAA "B" Conference regular season title for the Patriots...scored 50 goals in his junior season...was also a standout in soccer and basketball, earning All County honors for two seasons in both sports...was John Carroll's goalkeeper in soccer...father, David, earned a letter in basketball at UMBC during the 1973-74 campaign...brother David was an All American third baseman at Salisbury and sister Jennifer played collegiate basketball at Shepherd (WV) College...majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies and is interested in the fields of marketing, teaching, and may coach someday...son of Joyce and David Westervelt...born April 25, 1985.
