Emotional leader of the Retrievers...named a team captain for the second consecutive year...the senior netminder is the starter in goal coming out of the fall, but is being challenged by both Kevin Cepelak and Rick Metcalf.
AT UMBC: Produced one of college lacrosse’s best moments of 2002 in the face of extreme adversity...learned of his father Thomas’ unexpectant passing the morning after the Towson game...however, he elected to play two days later vs. Army...before a regional television audience, Flanagan recorded 19 saves and inspired his teammates to a season-high 15 goals in a 15-9 upset of the 18th-ranked Black Knights...earned Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week for his tremendous effort...followed up with a nine-save, 3-goals against effort in a win over NCAA-bound Stony Brook...started 11 of 12 games last season...made a season-high 21 saves vs. Georgetown and followed up with a 17-save, 8-goals allowed game in a 9-8 win over Penn State...finished fourth in the ECAC in save percentage at 55.8%...was selected as a co-captain last season, before ever playing a spring game at UMBC...an excellent ball-stopper who shook off some clearning failures early in the campaign...red-shirted during the 2001 season after transferring from Essex Community College.
BACKGROUND: Had two outstanding seasons at Essex CC, helping the Knights to the 1999 NJCAA title game vs. Nassau...made 20 saves in that game, although Essex fell, 7-4...earned NJCAA Second Team All Region honors in 1999, and was elevated to First Team All Region and Second Team All American status in 2000...was named to the MIAA First Team All Conference in his senior season at Archbishop Curley...will major in Information Systems at UMBC...enjoys scuba diving, hiking with his dog and the music of Eric Clapton...son of Beverly Hart and the late Thomas Flanagan...born May 26, 1980.
