Men's Basketball Travels to Maine For Sunday Matinee

UMBC at Maine Game Notes

The UMBC men's basketball squad (14-10, 6-3 America East) looks for its third consecutive road win in America East when they face the much-improved Maine Black Bears (5-19, 3-6) on Sunday, Feb. 10. Tip-off time at Chase Insurance Center is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

A Glance at the Retrievers: UMBC's five-game winning streak and seven-game home winning streak came to an end, as the Harford Hawks outlasted the Retrievers, 70-61, before 1,888 at the UMBC Event Center on Wednesday.

For just the seventh time this season and the second time in the last ten games, UMBC was outscored in the second half. The Retrievers entered the contest as the nation's No. 3 second-half team (+150 points), but Hartford scored 18 points at the free throw line in the second half and outscored UMBC, 38-28.

Graduate student forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) leads the Retrievers with 14.3 points per game. Sherburne buried career trey No. 250 against the Hawks and is now tied for third place on UMBC's all-time list. Junior guard K.J. Jackson (Houston, Texas), who led UMBC with 16 points versus Hartford, averages 11.5 points per game and has already moved into the school's top ten for steals in a season with 53.

UMBC allowed 70 or more points for just the second time in America East play this year, but still leads the league in scoring defense at 63.3 points per game.

A Glance at the Black Bears: Maine (5-19, 3-6 America East) had a two-game winning streak snapped with an 86-63 setback at Vermont on Wednesday. The Black Bears were coming off an impressive 78-59 victory at UMass Lowell and a 62-53 win over New Hampshire.

Junior forward Andrew Fleming is the reigning America East Conference Player of the Week. Fleming averaged 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in the Black Bears' two victories. He scored a career-high 38 points on 18-of-20 shooting in Maine's win at UMass Lowell. Fleming, who scored 16 points at Vermont, is not averaging 13.8 points per game, leads Maine with 7.1 caroms per game.

Red-shirt junior guard Isaiah White scored 21 points at Vermont and leads the squad with 14.0 points per game.

Maine has struggled behind the arc, hitting only 30.5 percent and allowing 38.1 percent and 9.2 treys per contest.

Series Record/Last Meetings: UMBC has won nine consecutive games in the series, dating back to Maine's last victory in 2014. The Retrievers have more America East victories (20, 20-13) than against any other league foe.  UMBC has won five in a row and are now 9-7 all-time at Maine.

In the earlier meeting to open league play, Maine led UMBC, 31-19, at the half, but the Retrievers outscored the Black Bears, 42-21, in the final 20 meetings to triumph, 61-52. UMBC forced 22 Black Bear turnovers and shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half to earn the victory. Fleming recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead all players in both categories.

Up Next: UMBC heads right back out on the road as they travel to Binghamton on Tuesday for a Wednesday evening encounter with the Bearcats.
