Bill Raftery, who was part of the broadcast team that called UMBC's historic win over Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Championships, will serve as the featured speaker at the Retrievers' Tip-Off Event on Friday evening, Oct. 12 at the Bond Street Wharf in Fells Point.
Raftery will be joined by New York Times best-selling author and UMBC basketball analyst John Feinstein, UMBC President Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall and Retriever head basketball coach Ryan Odom as speakers for the third annual event.
The 2018-19 defending America East champions will be introduced at the event, which has just been declared a sell-out.
Raftery's career as a basketball analyst has spanned more than 33 years and includes being a mainstay for CBS and others for events like the NCAA Tournament, Final Four, the Big East Championship, Big Ten Championship, ACC Championship, and SEC Championship, as well as NBA games for the New Jersey Nets. A two-time Emmy Award-winning analyst with playing and coaching experience, he served as head coach at Seton Hall from 1970-81, where he led the Pirates to seven straight winning seasons and a record of 154-141.
Raftery was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in December, 2017.
