UMBC Incoming Freshman Jose Placer Earns Spot on Team Puerto Rico for FIBA U18 Americas Championships

UMBC incoming freshman guard Jose Placer (Orlando, Fla./Master's Academy) is competing for Team Puerto Rico in the 2018 FIBA U18 Americas Championships in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada.

The team is off to a 2-0 start in Group A play with wins over Panama, 84-51, and Dominican Republic, 108-94 on Sunday and Monday. They are slated to take on the defending champion United States squad, coached by Kansas head mentor Bill Self in the final game of group play on Tuesday.

Placer has scored 10 points in each game to date.

Group B consists of Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and host Canada.

The quarterfinals take place on Thursday and all games from the Meridian Centre are televised by YouTube.com/FIBA.  

Placer, a 6-2 guard, earned 2017-18 Class 4A All-State honors from the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) and Source Hoops with input from state media.

The top four teams from the FIBA U18 Americas Championship will qualify to the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2018.
