The UMBC Retrievers continue their competition in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational Opening Round games as they travel to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on Big East power St. John's on Monday, Nov. 16. UMBC is coming back from North Carolina after a narrow 78-73 setback to the ACC's Wake Forest Demon Deacons, while St. John's edged Wagner, 66-57 in their opener. Tip-off time at Carneseca Arena is slated for 7:00 p.m. Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier have all the play-by-play action on (Q1370 AM ,www.q1370.com) and the game will also be televised by Fox Sports 1.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC gave Wake Forest everything they could handle before falling, 78-73, at LJVM Coliseum. UMBC trailed 41-40 at the half, drew even at 66-all with 6:48 remaining and came within 72-71 on a Rodney Elliott layup with 1:48 remaining. But the hosts hit five consecutive free throws in the final 1:28 to stave off the upset. Sophomore guard Jourdan Grant tied his career high by scoring 20 points, leading four Retrievers in double figures.
RED STORM UPDATE: Under first-year head coach and St. John's legend Chris Mullin, the Red Storm opened his era with a 66-57 victory over Wagner on Friday evening. St. John's led, 32-31, at the half, but held Wagner to 29 percent shooting in the second half to prevail. Freshman guard Federico Mussini led all players with 18 points in the contest, hitting 4-of-6 from long range. The Red Storm hit 9-of-20 from behind the arc.
SERIES NOTES: St. John's has won both match-ups between the two schools, posting victories in 2006 (78-57) and 2011 (82-59), both at Carnesseca Arena.
WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC opens the home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 15, when they host local rival Loyola. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
