Fresh off a convincing victory at Maine, the UMBC men's basketball team heads to the Empire State to take on two-time defending America East champion Albany on Sunday, Jan. 25. RETRIEVER UPDATE: After a bevy of near misses, UMBC (3-16, 1-5 AE) broke through into the win column on Thursday, triumphing at Maine, 76-59. Leading by five points at the half, the Retrievers hit 16-of-20 from the floor in the final 20 minutes to pull away. Junior post Cody Joyce scored a career and UMBC season high 28 points and is tied with teammate Wayne Sparrow for the top spot in the America East with 17.3 points per game in league play. Freshman guard Jourdan Grant tied his career high with 18 points and continues to lead the conference in assists per game (4.1).
GREAT DANE UPDATE: Albany (11-7, 6-0 AE), winner of back-to-back league titles, is undefeated in conference play in 2015 and has won nine of its last ten games overall. The Great Danes defeated host Hartford, 62-53 on Thursday. Senior forward Sam Rowley scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-13 from the field in the victory. Rowley is now averaging 13.5 points and a team-best 7.3 caroms per game. Junior guard Peter Hooley, the leading scorer for the Great Danes (14.5 ppg), has left the team, returning to his native Australia to be with his mother, Sue, who is battling colon cancer.
