After playing six of seven at home, UMBC will hit the road for six of seven after taking on Hartford on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Mon., Jan. 19) at the RAC Arena. The two teams have split 24 previous meetings, all in America East play. RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (2-15, 0-4 AE) has dropped six straight, but have led or trailed by just two points in the second half of each contest. The Retrievers struggled at the beginning of both halves on Saturday versus Vermont, giving up runs of 16-4 and 18-4 to start each stanza in the 71-54 loss. Grad student guard Wayne Sparrow led all players with 20 points and continues to lead UMBC at 13.8 points per game. He is second in league games with 72 points (18.0 pg) in four games. Freshman point guard Jourdan Grant leads the America East Conference in assists (4.4) per game and has 24 helpers in his first four AE contests.
HAWK UPDATE: Hartford (10-7, 3-1 AE) has won three straight, with the last two victories occurring by one point, 68-67 at UNH, and in overtime, 68-62 vs. UMass Lowell on Saturday evening. Senior forward Mark Nwakamma, a preseason All-AE selection, leads the Hawks in scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg). Hartford has made 50 more three-point field goals (135-85) than their opponents.
