UMBC opens 2015 by welcoming NJIT to the RAC Arena, in the Retrievers' final non-conference contest of the campaign. The encounter is the first between the two schools. Tip-off time for the contest is set for 7:05 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on Q1370 and streaming will be available on www.umbcretrievers.tv.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC put up a strange stat line in a 58-55 setback to Lehigh on Dec. 28 which halted a two-game winning streak. The Retrievers (2-10) hit 10 (a season-high) of 20 shots from behind the arc but just 6-of-36 inside it and could not hold onto a six-point lead it built with 8:25 to play. Grad. student guard Wayne Sparrow (team-best 12.8 ppg) scored a career-high 24 points in the contest. Senior forward Devarick Houston added 10 points and a season high nine caroms. Houston has hit 50 percent or better from the floor in 10 of 12 games this season.
HIGHLANDER UPDATE: NJIT (6-9) made national news by knocking off Michigan, 72-70, on Dec. 6. UMBC is the fourth AE team NJIT has faced, with the Highlanders edging Maine, 90-86 and falling to UML, 63-61, and Albany, 65-48. NJIT improved to 3-1 with a 77-65 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 30. Soph. guard Damon Lynn, who leads the squad at 17.6 points per game, led a balanced effort with 17 points. Lynn has buried 60 treys in 15 contests and NJIT converts 7.7 trifectas per outing.
