After a season-long four-game road swing, UMBC returns for just their third game at the RAC Arena when they face Longwood (Va.) University for the first time at the NCAA Division I level. The two schools were both members of the Mason-Dixon Conference in the early 1980's. Tip-off time is set for 5:05 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on Q1370 (Troy Green) and streaming will be available on www.umbcretrievers.tv.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC has struggled to score in its first nine games of the campaign, averaging just 53.1 points per game. The Retrievers (0-9) battled Central 1984-85 on nearly even terms for 36 minutes, but succumbed, 65-53, in New Britain on Dec. 10. Grad student guard Wayne Sparrow tied his career-best with 17 points and now averages 10.6 points per contest.
LANCER UPDATE: Longwood redshirt senior Quincy Taylor was named Big South Player of the Week by MidMajorMadness.com following his offensive explosion in Longwood's win over Dartmouth and loss to UT Martin Last week. Taylor, a 6-0, 180-pound point guard, averaged 30.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game as Longwood (3-6) defeated Dartmouth 74-73 Wednesday and fell to UT Martin 77-67. He leads LU with 17.0 points per game and has hit 15-of-28 treys in six games. RS junior post Lotanna Nwogbo (13.3 ppg, team-high 8.0 rpg) is hitting 65.2 percent (45 of 69) from the floor.
WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC will complete final exams next week and not play again until Sat., Dec. 20, when they face Kennesaw State (Ga.).
