Sparrow Nets 17; UMBC Falls, 65-53, to Central Conn. St. on Wednesday

New Britain, Conn.— UMBC fell, 65-53, to Central Connecticut State on Wednesday. Wayne Sparrow (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) led the Retrievers with 17 points, as they fall to 0-9 on the year.

UMBC came out strong defensively, forcing early Blue Devil turnovers. The Retrievers and Blue Devils would be tied at the first media timeout, at six apiece. From there CCSU would hit their stride, as Matt Mobley would go on to hit a pair of threes for CCSU, pushing them in front 18-13 midway through the half.

Devarick Houston (Jonesboro, Ga./Mays) and the Retrievers would pick up the pace, as Jourdan Grant (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) would connect with Houston on an alley-oop to cut the deficit to just one at 18-17. UMBC would go on a run to tie the game at 22-22 with just three minutes remaining in the half, thanks in part to a couple of big baskets from Cody Joyce (Churchton, Md./Southern).

UMBC and CCSU would be tied at the half, 28-28, with Joyce pacing the Retrievers with nine points. Wayne Sparrow (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) chipped in seven for UMBC, who shot 12-24 (50%) in the first half. Matt Mobley (10 points) and Brandon Peel (eight points) led the Blue Devils in the opening stanza.

UMBC came out with Will Darley (Timonium, Md./Dulaney/Fishbourne Academy) knocking down a pair of three's, to give UMBC their first lead at 34-33. From there, each team took turns trading the lead back and forth with CCSU going on a 7-0 run midway through the half to taking the lead. Drakeford hit a pair of buckets for the Blue Devils, helping them take a 44-38 advantage with 11:24 left.

The Retrievers stormed back, cutting the deficit to just six, at 46-40 thanks to baskets by Joyce and Sparrow. UMBC got the deficit to just five at 52-47 late in the contest. However, CCSU would hit their free throws down the stretch, winning 65-53.

Sparrow led the Retrievers with 17 points. Cody Joyce added 13, while Darley chipped in 11 for UMBC. Peel, Drakeford, and Mobley each had 16 for the Blue Devils.

UMBC is back in action on Sunday, December 14, when they host Longwood. The matchup with the Lancers begins at 5:00 p.m. at the RAC.
