Men's Basketball Ventures to Minnesota for Saturday Evening Tilt With Golden Gophers

SET THE SCENE: UMBC ventures to the state of Minnesota for the first time in its basketball history as the Retrievers take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers at famed Williams Arena on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tip-off time is set for 8:30 p.m. EST. Gary Stein has all the play-by-play action on (Q1370 AM ,www.q1370.com),starting with the pregame show at 8:25 p.m.

 

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC defended brilliantly at Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 19, but the Retriever offense sputtered, as the Greyhounds outlasted the visitors, 45-38. Both teams shot below 30 percent from the floor. The Retrievers led, 33-31, with ten minutes left, but did not score for the next 6:30 and the hosts built a 39-33 lead, which they maintained for the victory. JR post Cody Joyce led UMBC for the second consecutive contest, scoring 14 points.

 

GOLDEN GOPHER UPDATE: Minnesota dropped its opener, 81-68, at nationally-ranked Louisville in the 2014 Armed Forces Classic in Puerto Rico. They have bounced back with home victories over Western Kentucky (76-54) and Franklin Pierce (109-57) in the NIT Tip-Off. The contest versus UMBC will be Minnesota's third in five days. Four Gophers are averaging in double figures, led by senior guard Andrew Hollins at 13.7 points per outing.

 

WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC opens the home schedule by welcoming head coach Aki Thomas' alma mater, Howard University, to the RAC Arena, on Tues., Nov. 25. The game is the nightcap of a doubleheader and will tip-off at approximately 7:35 p.m.
