SET THE SCENE: UMBC looked well-positioned snap a six-game slide to Loyola one year ago at the RAC Arena, but the Greyhounds' furious rally propelled the visitors to an 89-83 overtime victory. The Retrievers (0-1) will get another opportunity to get in the win column over host Loyola (1-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 19 when the two schools battle for the 48th time. Tip-off time at Reitz Arena is slated for 8:00 p.m. Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier have all the play-by-play action on (Q1370 AM ,www.q1370.com), while Jason Knapp and Troy Green do the same on MASN-TV.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC got off to a great start at perennial mid-major power Akron on Nov. 14, hitting 8-of-10 from the floor and building an 18-10 lead. But the Retrievers cooled from the field (41.7% for the game) and struggled at the free throw line (14/28, 50%) as the Zips came away with a 74-57 victory. JR post Cody Joyce scored 13 points in his debut for the Retrievers. UMBC did manage to outrebound the bigger Zips, 35-34.
GREYHOUNDS UPDATE: Loyola opened with a hard-fought 71-59 loss at Texas Tech on Nov. 14, before coming away with a 76-71 triumph at home over Cornell two days later. Loyola has buried 17-of-38 three-point attempts (44.7%) in its first two contests. Freshman guard Andre Walker was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after averaging 14.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in the Greyhounds' two contests last week.
WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC goes from cold to colder as the Retrievers travel to Minneapolis, Minn. and take on the Big Ten's University of Minnesota for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tip-off time is slated for 8:30 EST.
