RETRIEVER UPDATE: In 2013-14, UMBC achieved its most victories (9) since the 2008-09 season, but its last victory came versus Albany on Feb. 12 and the Retrievers dropped a season-high five straight to conclude the campaign. SO G Rodney Elliott (15.0 ppg), selected as the America East Rookie of the Year, posted 20 or more points on seven occasions in his initial campaign. Eight of the 13 players on UMBC's active roster are freshmen or sophomores. UMBC should be bolstered by graduate student guard Wayne Sparrow, who competed for three seasons at the University of Richmond and is attending graduate school in his final year of eligibility at UMBC.
ZIPS UPDATE: The Akron Zips men's basketball team has been tabbed as the favorites in the Mid-American Conference East Division. For a second-straight season, SR F Demetrius "Tree" Treadwell (15.2 ppg, 8.6 rpg) was selected to the MAC East Preseason All-MAC team. The honor is one of many for Treadwell as he has been named preseason All-MAC by Lindy's, Sporting News and the Blue Ribbon Yearbook. The Zips return three starters and eight letterwinners from last season's squad that posted a 21-13 overall record and a 12-6 mark in MAC play. UA posted 21 or more wins for a ninth-straight season.
WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC returns to Baltimore and will face Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Reitz Arena. The contest will be televised by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
