Burlington, Vt. – UMBC tied a season-high with 21 turnovers, leading to 21 Vermont points, and the Retrievers fell to the first-place Catamounts, 76-52, in America East men's basketball action at Patrick Gymnasium.
Vermont (17-9, 11-1 AE) has won six straight games and 13 of its last 14. The Retrievers fell to 9-17 overall and 5-8 in league play.
UMBC freshman post David Kadiri (Beltsville, Md./Coolidge) snared a season-best 11 rebounds and added six points, two steals and a blocked shot. Classmate Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) played just 24 minutes due to illness, but still led UMBC with nine points and four assists.
Vermont opened the game on a 12-1 run as UMBC did not record its first field goal until a Kadiri lay-up at the 13:46 mark. The Retrievers turned the ball over 13 times in the first 20 minutes and trailed, 37-21, at the break.
A three-point play by UMBC senior forward Chase Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) to start the second half cut the deficit to 13. After a defensive stop, senior guard Quentin Jones (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph), the league's second-leading 3-point shooter, got an open look from the right baseline to cut the gap to 10, but the shot drew iron.
The Catamounts would methodically build the lead to as many as 28 points en route to posting their 14th consecutive triumph over the Retrievers.
UMBC struggled from the floor, converting just 18-of-55 shots (32.7%) and misfiring on 18-of-22 from behind the arc. The Catamounts hit 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field and outscored UMBC, 46-22, in the paint.
Vermont attempted 20 of the first 22 free throws of the game in the game's first 28 minutes of play.
Senior post Brett Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) hit all four of his field goal attempts and added eight points for the visitors in 17 minutes.
Vermont was paced by senior post Clancy Rugg led all scorers with 19 points.
UMBC heads right back on the road to face another league heavyweight, as the Retrievers take on Stony Brook in New York on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
