Cambridge ,Mass. – For the fourth time this season, UMBC freshman guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) has been named America East Conference Men's Basketball Rookie-of-the-Week.
Elliott nearly recorded UMBC's first triple-double in 19 years, with a 14-point, 11-rebound, 8-assist effort in the 73-61 victory over Binghamton on Jan. 29. The 11 rebounds and eight helpers were both team season highs for the Retrievers. He then converted a team season-best 12 free throws as part of a 21-point effort in the narrow 83-80 setback at Maine on Feb. 1. Elliott amassed seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals versus the Black Bears.
The first-year guard has scored in double figures in 18 of 22 games this season and his 21-point effort versus Maine was his fourth of 20 or more points. He is sixth in America East in scoring (14.2 ppg), fourth in assists (3.6), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0), eighth in steals (1.2) and tenth in field goal percentage (44.7%).
Elliott has already passed the 300-point plateau in his freshman campaign. His four weekly honors ties a UMBC mark set by Chauncey Gilliam, who captured four during the 2009-10 season.
UMBC opens a three-game homestand when they host New Hampshire in an America East Conference match-up on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
