The UMBC men's basketball team competes in its ninth America East Conference Tournament and opens play on Thursday, March 1 when the take on the Binghamton Bearcats. The Retrievers are the No. 8 seed, and Binghamton the No. 9 seed and the squads will tip-off at the Chase Family Arena on the campus of the University of Hartford at approximately 8:15 p.m. Paul Mittermeier has the call on V1370 (www.v1370.com).
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (4-25, 3-13 America East) enters the tournament coming off of three consectuive losses after a Feb. 15 victory at Binghamton. Brian Neller scored a team-high 15 points in the regular season finale, an 80-49 setback at Vermont. Sophomore forward Chase Plummer (15.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg), who is putting together one of the top sophomore seasons in UMBC's 26-year Division I history, fouled out of that game in 23 minutes of action and saw his double figures streak of 11 straight games come to an end.
BEARCAT UPDATE: Binghamton (1-29, 1-15) lost its first 27 games of the season before stunning Vermont, 57-53, on Feb. 21, knocking the Catamounts from a first-place tie with Stony Brook. The Bearcats dropped subsequent contests to Albany and UNH, playing three times in six days to end the season. Sophomore guard Rob Mansell (14.0 ppg) and freshman post Ben Dickinson (13.0 ppg) lead the Bearcat offense.
WHO'S UP NEXT: Should the Retrievers prevail over Binghamton, they would face No. 1 seed/regular season champion Stony Brook at noon on Saturday, March 3.
