UMBC plays its final game of 2011 when they play the first of three games up north in a 11 days, taking on a young, but talented Niagara squad on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at the Gallagher Center. RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC's 2-3 zone worked for about 22 minutes vs. No. 17 Indiana, but the Hoosiers hit seven consecutive treys in a 33-5 run and the hosts prevailed, 89-47, on Dec. 22. The Retrievers have struggled from the floor in their current three-game slide, hitting only 62 of 199 (31.2%) attempts. Sophomore forward Chase Plummer (13.8 ppg, 8.7 rpg) has scored in double figures in 10 of 11 games this season.
PURPLE EAGLE UPDATE: The Purple Eagles have dropped five of six and four consecutive games at home. Their lone win in that span is a 79-76 victory at America East member Hartford. Niagara (4-8) could not complete a rally and fell, 85-81, at Quinnipiac on Dec. 22. Red-shirt freshman guard Antoine Mason, son of former NBA standout Anthony Mason, led Niagara with 22 points. Highly sought-after freshman guard Juan'ya Green leads the team in scoring (19.1 ppg) and assists (3.6 pg) in nearly 38 minutes per outing.
WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC opens America East play in hectic fashion, playing at UNH on Monday, returning home to entertain Albany on Thursday and heading back north to take on Maine on Saturday.
