Men's Basketball Returns to North Country; Retrievers Take on Maine in Saturday Matinee
The UMBC men's basketball team completes a grueling first week in America East Conference play when they take on the Maine Black Bears at Alfond Arena on Saturday, Jan. 6. The Retrievers have won four consecutive times in Orono. Tip-off time is set for 2:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the completion of UMBC's women's game at Alfond Arena. RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC opened the week with an 82-76 win at UNH on Monday, then returned to Baltimore, but fell, 89-72 to a red-hot Albany team on Thursday. The Retrievers boarded two planes 12 hours later to face the Black Bears on Saturday afterrnoon. Sophomore forward Chase Plummer posted career highs in both games, scoring 23 at UNH and posting 25 vs. Albany. UMBC was whistled for 60 fouls in two games, and the Danes took full advantage, hitting 30 of 40 shots from the charity stripe.
BEAR UPDATE: Maine has won four of their last five games and opened America East play with a 76-61 victory at Binghamton on Monday. Post Alasdair Fraser (14.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg) led the way with 25 points vs. the Bearcats. Senior guard Gerald McLemore leads the way for Maine with 19.7 points per game and is hitting 47 percent from the floor and 41 percent (32-of-78) from behind the arc. Maine is 4-0 at Alfond Arena in 2011-12.
WHO'S UP NEXT: After taking on Maine, UMBC will play just once in the next nine days- a Wed., Jan. 11 home contest vs. Stony Brook.
