Men's Basketball Heads To Loyola for Wednesday Evening Clash

The UMBC Retrievers are looking to break a losing streak against Loyola and will have to do it at Reitz Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. The Greyhounds have won three straight in the series, although UMBC has won 12 of 23 meetings since teh 1986-87 season. RETRIEVER UPDATE: Five Retrievers scored in double figures, but it was not enough, as the visiting VMI Keydets his 8-of-14 shots from behind the arc in the second half and outlasted UMBC, 94-77 in the tip-off contest of UMBC's 25th season of NCAA Division I basketball. After missing last season with knee surgery, forward Justin Fry made a successful return to the court, posting his fourth career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Newcomers Laurence Jolicoeur (16 points-10 rebounds), Chase Plummer(13 points) and Travis King (12 points) also scored in double figures for UMBC, as did returnerAdrian Satchell (10 points).

 

 

GREYHOUND UPDATE: Loyola also opened at home this weekend, dropping a 75-72 decision to visiting Drexel. The Dragons (1-0) scored the game's first eight points and held a 30-12 lead 11 minutes into the contest before the Greyhounds began climbing back into the contest. Loyola could only get as close as two, coming after a banked-in three-pointer by senior guard Brian Rudolph with 3.1 seconds remaining. The Greyhounds were led by 21 points by senior guardJamal Barney and 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds by sophomore guard Robert Olson.

 

 

Who's Up Next: UMBC returns home on Saturday when they host Central Connecticut State at 7:00 p.m. at the RAC Arena. Following that contest, the Retrievers play five consecutive games on the road.

The two schools met at least one time for 20 consecutive seasons from 1987- 88 through 2006-07... Loyola won the first nine meetings

and UMBC has had streaks of seven and four striaght wins... In 23 NCAA Division I meetings, UMBC is 12-11 vs. the Greyhounds.

 

Jamal Barney scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half as visiting Loyola (2-1) held off UMBC (0-2), 69-66 at the RAC Arena last year. UMBC took a 58-57 with 3:03 remaining, but could hold back the Greyhounds in the final moments of the contest.

Like the Black Unis?: All four of UMBC's wins in 2009-10 came on the road and the Retrievers were 3-1 in their last four road contests last season.

 

Those Guys Can Shoot: The 94 points allowed by UMBC in a season opener is the most since a 103-80 loss at Maryland to open the 1992-93 season.

 

Doubling Their Pleasure: Justin Fry (15 pts./11 rebs.) and Laurence Jolicoeur (16 pts./10 rebs.) each posted double-doubles in the opener vs. Loyola. Fry was also a part of the dynamic duo the last time that UMBC had two players with double-digit rebounds in the same game. Fry (10) andDarryl Proctor (11) combined for 21 caroms in the 2009 America East quarterfinal win over Boston U. (3-7-09).
