Men's Basketball Set to Face Defending Champion Vermont in America East Semifinals on Sunday Evening
For the fourth time in the last seven seasons, UMBC has advanced to the America East Tournament semifinals. The sixth-seeded Retrievers shot a season-best 54.5 percent from the floor and upset No. 3 Hartford, 69-62 in Saturday’s quarterfinals. They will face nemesis Vermont- the No. 2 Catamounts defeated No. 7 UNH, 61-42, in the first quarterfinal of the day. Vermont holds a prohibitive 20-4 series lead and has won the last 11 meetings. RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC (8-22) hit 15-of-19 second half field goal attempts and rallied to defeat No. 3 Hartford, 69-62, to advance to the America East semifinals. The Retrievers were an efficient 9-of-17 from behind the arc, including 5-of-6 in the final 20 minutes. Ryan Cook (24 pts.)and Brian Neller (20 pts.) scored 44 of the Retrievers’ 69 points.
CATAMOUNT UPDATE: Vermont (20-10) has posted back-to-back 20 win seasons under second-year head coach John Becker. The defending league champions have won four of their last five outings. Their balanced attack is led by JR F Clancy Rugg, who posts 11.4 points per game. Classmate and frontcourt partner Brian Voelkel, an America East First Team and All-Defensive Team performer, leads the team in rebouding (8.8) and assists (4.8) per game.
