2/15/2003
Robert Morris guard Maurice Carter scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half as the Colonials sent UMBC to its sixth straight defeat, a 64-58 win over the Retrievers at the RAC Arena. UMBC trailed, 25-22 at halftime, and just could not get over the hump in the second half. Junior forward Eugene Young, who scored a season high 12 points, converted a three-point play to tie the game at 40-all with 11:05 to play, but Carter hit a three-pointer 15 seconds later and RMU would lead the rest of the way. UMBC got to within two points on a John Zito three-point play at 56-54 with 1:37 to play, but DaMarcus Ellis hit two free throws six seconds later and Carter hit one of two to built the lead back to 59-54 with 1:08 to play. After UMBC's P.J. Hatcher made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to play, Carter and Ellis hit four straight to seal the victory. Kareem Washington led UMBC with 20 points, but was just 7 of 22 from the floor. John Zito recored his second straight "double-double" with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
