MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO LIU IN OVERTIME, 73-72
1/25/2003
Brooklyn, NY – The UMBC men’s basketball lost their second game in a row in a heartbreaking 73-72 overtime decision against Long Island University, Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Athletic Center. With the win, LIU (6-10, 4-3 NEC) completed a sweep of the Retrievers, who are now 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast Conference. UMBC led by as many as 22 points late in the first half, and went into halftime, up 40-24. However, the Blackbirds came right back in the second period with a 20-6 run to cut the lead to two. LIU would come within one point several times, and would eventually force overtime on a Morgan Williams three-point field goal with only one second left in regulation. The Retrievers quickly fell behind in overtime, 71-66, but would cut the deficit to one behind a Kareem Washington three-point play. Senior Justin Wilson would then give the Retrievers their first lead in the extra period on a goaltending call with 13.8 seconds remaining. But on the other end, LIU’s Raymond Edwards would score on a layup underneath the basket for the game’s final points. UMBC’s Washington took a wild off-balance shot at buzzer, but it was way off the mark, as the Retrievers fell, 73-72. Washington led UMBC in scoring with 19 points. Other Retrievers in double-figures included Wilson (15), freshman John Zito (12), sophomore Andrew Feeley (11), and freshman P.J. Hatcher (10).
