Villanova started the second half on a 15-2 run and held off a game UMBC squad, 72-60, before 6,500 fans at the Pavilion on Friday night.

UMBC stunned the partisan VU crowd by erasing a 20-11 deficit with an 11-0 run, capped by consecutive P.J. Hatcher three-point goals and led, 29-26 at intermission. The Wildcats would build a 46-35 lead with 12:27 remaining, but an inspired effort by sophomore center Andrew Feeley sparked one more UMBC rally and his two free throws cut the deficit to 50-46 with 7:09 to play. But five straight points by VU's Randy Foye started a 12-2 run and put the game out of reach for UMBC.

Hatcher scored a season high 14 points and Feeley recorded his first "double-double" of the season with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Justin Wilson (13 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals) and Rob Gogerty (10 points, 3 assists, 1 turnover) also played strong games for UMBC. The Retrievers outrebounded VU, 40-39, as the Wildcats came into the contest with a +11.4 rebound margin.

UMBC fell to 3-2, while VU improved to 5-3.
